The People's Voice: Fight For Your Environmental Future
Climate change is a very big modern day issue. Concerning our day to day activities on earth. The World Trade Organization has predicted that climate change will directly be responsible for the deaths of over 2,50,000 people each year. Many governments are failing to respond to this issue. The pressure groups are believing that change is possible. They’re taking each and every action so that the political groups recognise this agenda. There is one movement that is going in US it's name is Sunrise Movement and one in UK which is known as Extinction Rebellion. Its members believe that the only step to environmental change is people’s destiny to rise up.
People are standing up and demanding a better future. in the US a group of youth people are campaigning for urgent environmental action. They are forcing the adults to listen. They wanted to be serious, determined, resolved to the environmental problems.
Most of the people in the Sunrise Movement are under 30 years. And it has grown to 1,00,000 members. Their strategy is very clear to work under the norms of the government so the political groups recognise them. This movement is led by a 26 year old Varshney Prakash in 2015. The growing climate change has forced her to start a movement. She believes that we should invest in renewable resources. And our politician’s have not stand up to our expectations. They have not taken necessary steps to create a safe environment for its people.
The heart of the Sunrise Movement is the Green New Deal a radical environmental change policy. This idea was taken by the US in 1960s. It’s goal is to completely transform the US economy by ending its dependency on fossil fuels and shifting to renewable resources by creating jobs in the process. Green New Deal is an effort to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs.
The sunrise movement Is clearly influential. Their ultimate goal is to convince the majority of congressmen and women to sponsor the Green New Deal. So, when the next government is elected in 2020 the bill has the weight of support to make it a policy.
In October 2018 a group of activists named Extinction Rebellion was formed. They work outside the system and use non-violent methods to act. There protests are designed in such a way to maximise public exposure. In just 6 months they have expanded into 15 countries and spread across 4 continents. They started an idea of the Blood of our Children. Which believes that because of the impacts of pollution, it kills people. They haded 3 demands. (1) That the government to tell the truth about the crisis to the people. (2) To reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025. (3) To achieve structural political change in the form of ordinary citizens assembly who are educated on the facts and come forward to talk about what might be the best route for its citizens.
This group of people are non-violent, they are maintaining respect, they are risking their own liberties.
On the 1st may 2019 the House of Commons makes history becoming the first national parliament in the world to declare a climate and ecological emergency.
Climate change activism stretches back 50 years ago that is April 22nd 1974 the launch of Earth Day. 20 Million Americans took to the streets and a modern environmental movement was born in the 80s Greenpeace took matters into their own hands heading to the seas to battle the commercial dumping of toxic waste, nuclear testing and whale hunting. Today the movement has a new figure that is of a teenager named Greta Thunberg. By going on school strikes she inspired millions of students in 112 to join her in a global war house. The message has been clear for 50 years but today the voices are louder and more insistent than ever.
